Nefrusobek's PromiseNefrusobek knelt alongside her father's bed and tapped his brow with her fingers. His fever seemed to burn even hotter with each touch. Almost one moon must have passed since Nsu Atumhotep fell into this sickness, and despite all the chants and rattles of masked healers and his own family's prayers, his condition still did not improve. His gaunt body still sprawled over the linen sheets, with his balding scalp cradled in the bed's wooden headrest, and only his chest moved at all. It rose and fell to his shallowing breath's rhythm.Nefrusobek's Promise by *BrandonSPilcher
Nefrusobek's eyes twinkled wet with tears that leaked down her black-brown cheeks. She knew the day she feared more than any other would come sooner or later in her life, but never did she expect it to loom so close by. Her father would never have summoned her alone to his bedchamber if he did not mean to give her the talk. She drooped her head as if she already carried the weight of his crown and every one of the many burdens that would come with it.
Sekhotep and the Hot CombHolding a bronze mirror to her face, Sekhotep plowed an ivory comb through her hair. Over a season ago, only scattered peppercorn tufts remained once she shaved her head clean. Those tufts would soon grow into one thick black bush. That may have cushioned her scalp against her bed’s headrest or the many crowns she needed to wear as Pharaoh of Kemet, but dense woolly hair could also draw in swarms of head lice. Her comb must have caught hundreds of the tiny monsters by now judging from the dusty stuff between its teeth. Sekhotep grimaced from the thought.Sekhotep and the Hot Comb by *BrandonSPilcher
“Preparing yourself for the hairdresser, Your Majesty?” Djadao, Sekhotep’s plump old Vizier, said as he waddled outside her boudoir.
Sekhotep put the comb and mirror down on a counter. “If only I didn’t have to keep him waiting so long,” Sekhotep said. “There’s no way I can get all the nits out of this jungle.”
“That’s why I keep telling you to let him take care of
Sekhotep's Character ProfileName: Sekhotep, Pharaoh of Kemet (an alternate-timeline version of ancient Egypt)Sekhotep's Character Profile by *BrandonSPilcher
Age: Late teens to twenties
Physical Description: Tall and lean with a muscled backside that gives her added speed. She has dark brown skin and short kinky hair which she hides under her various crowns on formal occasions.
Personality: She’s an energetic young lady who prefers sports like hunting, swimming, proto-basketball, and martial arts practice to the bureaucratic nuts and bolts of managing her country’s administration. Nonetheless she wants to govern her subjects with as much benevolence as she can and her policies tend to favor the less fortunate (e.g. re-distributing wealth from her coffers to support the poorest citizens). In addition Sekhotep is an independently-minded woman who shuns male attention since most of her wannabe suitors want little more than to bed and mooch off someone rich and powerful.
Pharaoh's JusticeSekhotep strutted onto the limestone rostrum in Waset’s town square. All around her, firelight danced to the thundering drums on the huts’ mud-brick walls as the mass of townspeople brandished their torches. The perspiration on her dark brown skin glistened along with her gold jewelry even as the day’s heat faded into twilight’s chill. Not only did the wavering torches cast their warmth onto her, but Sekhotep knew that soon she would entertain her subjects in the least pleasant way she could.Pharaoh's Justice by *BrandonSPilcher
Nonetheless she strode to the rostrum’s edge with a smile for the crowd. They all hooted her name while stamping their feet to add to the drums’ rhythm. She pulled out a stone mace caked with dried blood and raised it straight up to the moon. The weapon’s weight pushed down against her arm muscles as she held it.
The drums boomed together for one final time. On this the townspeople fell silent.
“People of Waset, tonight you have the unique privilege
